Olive Ridley Sea Turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) emerging from Sea, Costa Rica - stock photo
Ostional Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica: A Pacific Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) emerging during an arribada to nest at the beach.
The olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) adopted a unique nesting behavior that increases their offspring’s chance of survival. They deposit more eggs in the sand than predators can consume; this is known in Costa Rica as "arribada". An arribada is a unique masive nesting phenomenon. Its arrival transforms the beach into one of the few places in the world where it spawns in arribadas, it can be up to 300,000 turtles, especially in the rainy season between August and November.
