OSIJEK, CROATIA, EX-YUGOSLAVIA - 1991 JULY: People attend a funeral of a Croatian soldier killed by the Serbs during the ethnic conflict between Serbs and Croats in the eastern Croatian region of Slavonia on July 1991 in Osijek, Croatia - Ex Yugoslavia. 30 years have passed since the dissolution of the Yugoslav Republic. The Yugoslav Wars were a series of separate but related ethnic conflicts, wars of independence, and insurgencies fought in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001, leading up to and resulting from the breakup of the Yugoslav federation in 1992. Its constituent republics declared independence due to unresolved tensions between ethnic minorities in the new countries, which fueled the wars. (Photo by Franco Origlia/Getty Images)
