The Maybell Horse Drive by Sombrero Ranch
BROWN'S PARK, CO - MAY 5: Head cowboy Zac Truer, with coffee in hand, gets some of the ranch's horses prepared to be put inside trailers at Sombrero Ranch in Brown's Park on May 5, 2018 near Maybell, Colorado. Truer and other cowboys at the ranch are getting ready to take part in the Sombrero Ranch Great American Horse Drive. The drive is a two-day ride over open range land where cowboys and riders move 400-500 Sombrero horses 62 miles to their ranch just west of Craig. A week before the Sombrero Ranches Great American Horse Drive begins, the Brown's Park cowboys are out sweeping 50,000 acres of rolling hills and sagebrush in the northwest corner of Colorado for Sombrero horses that have wintered there. During the popular yearly drive the horses are moved through the small town of Maybell. The Great American Horse Drive takes place each spring in May. The goal is to safely transport horses by foot rather than by tractor-trailer. The annual drive is also a popular tourism event attracting hundreds of people from all over the world that come to watch the horse drive. (Photo by Helen H.
