Hans Holbein the Younger ( c. 1497 – between 7 October and 29 November 1543 ) was a German-Swiss artist, painter and printmaker. He is best known for the portraits he painted.. Holbein's dance of death alphabet was first used in August 1524 - The woodcutter was Hans Lützelburger. As always with Roman majuscules there are 24 letters. Y The Baby Death takes the baby from the cradle while the mother / nurse watches terrified. It looks as if Death is dancing with the child. »Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not«. Z Judgment Day The woodcut of Judgment Day is nearly identical to the one from Holbein's great dance of death. The same passages from the Bible are cited for both works.
