Children In Seaside Oita Prefecture Community Release Lggerhead Turtle Young Into The Waves

Video footage taken on the night of Sept. 16 in the seaside Youra neighborhood of Tsukumi, Oita Prefecture, shows local children gathered on the beach releasing recently hatched loggerhead sea turtles into the surf as part of a continuing conservation effort. About 50 young turtles were let loose to crawl into the surf, from 114 eggs verified in July, temporarily removed for their protection and then later returned to the beach to hatch. The release event was the first held after a three-year hiatus, and brings hope that the turtles will return as adults in about 15 years.
