Rockets Fired in Explosive Festival at Saitama Prefecture Shrine

Video footage taken on Oct. 8 at Mukujinja shrine in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, shows rockets being fired off during the shrine’s annual Ryusei Matsuri festival for a bountiful harvest. Twenty-five participating groups provided the 30 rockets, made from explosive-packed tubes measuring 10 centimeters in diameter bound by bamboo rods reaching up to 18 meters in length. The rockets reached heights of about 300 meters before exploding, releasing sparkling streamers and parachutes before a dazzled crowd of about 93,000 spectators. The video was taken by Kenji Takayama of The Asahi Shimbun.
