Woodlands, Mitchells Plain residents protest on Youth Day
Residents whose shacks had been demolished early in the morning on Youth Day, the public holiday which honors the memory of the school students who had opposed the imposition of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in 1976, protested by burning tires and barricading Eisleben Road. An informal settlement/squatter camp sprung up in the area a few weeks previously, when backyard dwellers invaded 3 pieces of open land in the area. (Footage by Gallo Images/Wesley Fester)
