KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Hey, everybody. HODA KOTB: It's... GIFFORD: How are you? It's Monday, September 15. KOTB: Don't you just love the Mondays. GIFFORD: We just slap that smile on anyways. KOTB: Yeah, doesn't even matter. GIFFORD: Got your smile and your Spanx, baby, and you're ready to go. KOTB: And you know what's funny? I did something to my eye. I can't remember, I must have scratched it trying to take my contact out. So literally, I can see half of the world crystal clear, and half of it, like where Jimmy is and everything, it's just fuzz. GIFFORD: But you can see me. KOTB: I can see you. GIFFORD: OK, that's good. Because I only have a contact in my right one, so between the two of us... KOTB: We'll be able to read the prompter. GIFFORD: Yeah, we're going to be pretty darn... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...pathetic today. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD, co-host: But not as pathetic, probably, as the stock market. HODA KOTB, co-host: Oh, my gosh. GIFFORD: Which is in for--Wall Street is in for a rocky road. KOTB: OK. GIFFORD: Let's just rename it Rocky Road today. KOTB: Look at--I've never seen every paper have the exact same headline, unless it's a huge tragedy. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: This is"Wall of Fear," this one is--what is this one? GIFFORD:"Bank Shot." KOTB:"Bank Shot." Of course, the Wall Street Journal and The Times have, you know, they're all terrible. And if you're just kind of figuring it out, Lehman Brothers... GIFFORD: If you're just getting up, go back to bed. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: Yeah. Wake up when it's all over. KOTB: Yes, and take some--take some pills. Lehman Brothers is in debt. They were saying--and I don't even know how this was possible--613 billion, with a B. And last year, I was just seeing something, the CEO of that got a bonus... GIFFORD: Of course. KOTB: ...because they were doing relatively well. Like a $20 million bonus, or something. And now everything's in the tank. It's scary when you wake up and every paper is telling--look at the--I mean, my gosh, the Wall Street Journal, of course... GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: I mean... GIFFORD: But these are huge companies. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: This might go down as the biggest failure in history of American... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...economics, they're saying. And then this... KOTB: It's--well, it's... GIFFORD: ...one's very frightening, because it affects so many people, the insurance one. KOTB: The insurance one. And Merrill was bought by Bank of America. But it is scary. GIFFORD: Well, they've offered. Has it gone through? They've--they're 40--$29 a share--44--yeah, I don't... KOTB: Yeah. Yeah, I don't know if it's gone all the way through. But it is scary. But they do say, again, for regular folks, you know, who are wondering, like, what do I do, and how does it affect me? They say that the banks are safe. Ninety-eight percent of the banks are functioning just fine. Like, there should not be a kind of run... GIFFORD: It's pension funds and things that you also worry about. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Because that--you don't--a lot of people don't know where there money is in those pension funds. KOTB: Right. It's hard to--it's hard to navigate those waters. GIFFORD: You know? It's heartbreaking. KOTB: But one last... GIFFORD: But I do know, it bothers me--it bothers, I think, everybody in this world... KOTB: What? What? What? GIFFORD: ...when people who have been entrusted with running these amazing institutions are then--jump out of a crashing plane and get golden parachutes. KOTB: Well... GIFFORD: That makes me crazy. KOTB: Well, you're going to love this, then. GIFFORD: No I'm not. KOTB: Yes, you will, because look, on--in The Washington Post it says here, when it came to Freddie and Fannie, no golden parachutes for ex-CEOs. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: They're not getting the $20 million... GIFFORD: They shouldn't. KOTB: It's just like putting salt in a wound to see someone get a gazillion dollars when everyone else is struggling. GIFFORD: While all these other people are out of work and wondering what they're going to... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...you know, get their kids for Christmas this year. It makes me crazy. KOTB: How was... GIFFORD: Don't make me crazy on Monday. KOTB: I'm not. How was your weekend? Let's talk about that. Let's do something fun. GIFFORD: Well, my weekend was so much better than all the people... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...all of our friends down in Texas and Louisiana, and now all the way--and starting now in Arkansas and everywhere else, so. KOTB: And Chicago, the flooding, too. GIFFORD: Chicago, all the way--yeah. So you almost feel guilty enjoying, you know... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...a quiet weekend when other people come--have to come home after the weekend and find that their homes have been destroyed, so. KOTB: Galveston was really, really smacked. I mean, it was hit really, really hard, and there were a couple thousand people who didn't leave. And again--you know, it's funny when you live in those coastal towns, because I lived in New Orleans for years. I kind of understand, as crazy as it sounds... GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: ...people saying, you know what, I'm not going to go, because... GIFFORD: `I've been through hurricanes, I've--yeah, I've weathered them.' KOTB: Yeah, `I've been here for 50 years, I board up my home, it's the same old thing.' And I--even though inside now, I'm saying please go, but you--I sort of get the mind-set a little bit. If all you have is your home, you don't have, you know, stocks and bonds, that's all you have... GIFFORD: That's all you have. KOTB: ...I can see why people go there and hang on and want to protect it. GIFFORD: But is it worth losing your life over? KOTB: No. No. GIFFORD: And is it worth losing the lives of other people that have to save you and put their lives in danger... KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: ...because you did not heed a warning which was as stark as if you stay, you could die. KOTB: Right. And they provided transportation... GIFFORD: Yes. KOTB: ...places to go. I can sort of see in New Orleans' case, where it sort of snuck up on people and they--there weren't any buses and they couldn't get out. GIFFORD: Yeah, and that was... KOTB: But when they provide--yeah, a way out. Yeah. GIFFORD: But you're--even so, your heart still goes out to them afterwards. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: Whether they made the wrong choice or not, it's all tragic. KOTB: Can I--I want to tell you something that made me so angry yesterday, and I don't know why I'm... GIFFORD: There's a whole lot to make us angry today, and... KOTB: Well, this--OK, this was weird. I was driving home from Rehoboth. I went to the beach with my mom this weekend. OK. GIFFORD: How is Sami? KOTB: She's the best. She's great. So... GIFFORD: Anyway. KOTB: ...there is a long, long, long line of traffic. There's a toll line, and if you have an E-ZPass, you can fly in the other lane. So I'm sitting in the one where you have to pay the cash... GIFFORD: Because you're in a rental car. KOTB: I'm in a rental car. It's--you know, I've been there for 30 minutes, it's 90 degrees... GIFFORD: Sweltering. KOTB: ...I'm sweating. I pull all the way up, I'm right at the point where it's forking. The E-ZPass people go this way and the money payers go this way. This guy cuts right in front of me... GIFFORD: I... KOTB: ...OK, and he starts scooting in. And I was... GIFFORD: He's the CEO of one of these companies, I'm telling you. KOTB: I had had it with him. And I inched up, and I'm thinking, `You're not getting in.' GIFFORD: Ooh. KOTB: I was--I'd had it. GIFFORD: Don't do that to Hoda woman. KOTB: Wait, wait. His window unrolled, and he said, `I'm getting in there,' and I said, `I've been sitting in this line for 45 minutes.' And he looked at me, and he goes, `Let me tell you something. I am getting in there.' And he turned his car and starting getting, like, this close to my car. So of course I let him go. And I was--it was one of those things that made me so ticked. And I started thinking about all the conversations we've been having about Sarah Palin and this and that and the other, and you know, sometimes in the prism of life, when you're just... GIFFORD: The way we see it. KOTB: Yeah. I was thinking, like, why did that guy think he could--he could say that to me, and would he have said it to anyone? So I took a breath and I said, you know, when I wake up in the morning, I don't see, you know, woman, you know, woman of color. I don't see all those things, I just see my--you know, I just see a person. So I was thinking while I was--when I was enraged, thinking about tailgating him all the way home--which I didn't do. GIFFORD: Ooh, Hoda wanted to hurt him. KOTB: It was just one of those--you know what, have you ever had one of those moments where you... GIFFORD: Yeah, yeah. KOTB: ...and then you wonder, am I--am I overly mad? GIFFORD: But the thing is--the thing is, he just went on his way. He lives his life that way, Hoda. KOTB: He... GIFFORD: He did not have a crisis going on. Because somebody like that would say... KOTB: Yeah, no. GIFFORD: ...`My wife's in the car,' you know. KOTB: No. GIFFORD: This is a guy who... KOTB: No, I'm getting in. GIFFORD: ...I guarantee you, lives his life that way from the moment he wakes up to--and so you know what, he has to live in his own... KOTB: Yeah. So forget it. OK, I'm not mad. GIFFORD: Yeah. You know what? And you got to get past that and be bigger than that, because you're my Hoda woman. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: OK? KOTB: Exactly. GIFFORD: You need to pray for him. Mm-hmm. KOTB: All righty. OK. Anyway... GIFFORD: That is--I mean, people laugh about--and there's this whole debate about people who have faith, but I'll tell you something. KOTB: Hm. GIFFORD: When somebody says something cruel or does something, when you have the discipline to literally pray for that person... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...something happens in another dimension and you can no longer hate or despise somebody you've just prayed for. Something happens in your heart, because hate can't live--love cannot live where hate does. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: It's like oil and water. Can't do it. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: And so when you flood your heart with love... KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: ...hate can't live there. And then that person has no more power over you. Ta-da. KOTB: So that's it? GIFFORD: End of story. KOTB: Easy peasy. GIFFORD: A little applause, please, from all you... KOTB: She did not make them. They were going to do it anyway, even without the prompting. GIFFORD: I love you guys. KOTB: OK,"SNL" last night. GIFFORD: Oh, boy. KOTB: Hello. GIFFORD: Oh, boy. KOTB: You know what, OK, you knew Tina Fey was coming out dressed as Sarah Palin. Come on. GIFFORD: And--she had to... KOTB: With the hair, and the whole... GIFFORD: And she was amazing. KOTB: The accent was dead-on. GIFFORD: I mean--was uncanny. Yes, yes, yes. KOTB: She was--let's listen to her. GIFFORD: You have to. KOTB: Yes, let's listen. (Clip from"Saturday Night Live") KOTB: OK, you know... GIFFORD: It's--you got to give her her due. She is a brilliant mimic, impressionist and actress. KOTB: Oh, my gosh. GIFFORD: She really is. KOTB: She is--look at how they--look--just look at the glasses and the hair... GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: ...and those--bone structure... GIFFORD: And kudos to our friends over there at--you know, Donna over there, and Eric... KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: ...and Dale, and everybody in the makeup... KOTB: Who dressed... GIFFORD: ...and hair department and wardrobe. KOTB: Who made her look like that. GIFFORD: Pretty brilliant stuff. Yeah. KOTB: She--that was--that was good. Can you imagine what the next six weeks are going to be like on"SNL"? GIFFORD: Well, are... KOTB: Come on. GIFFORD: Is she going to do it weekly for the next six weeks? Because, I mean, she does have... KOTB: She has another job. GIFFORD: ...a little show called"30 Rock," hello. KOTB: I've heard of that. GIFFORD: That she doesn't--she's not just in, but writes, right? KOTB: I know. But there's so much juicy stuff they've got to have. They've just got to keep the whole thing going for awhile. GIFFORD: You know, it's the finest impression I've seen... KOTB: That accent is funny. GIFFORD: ...in a long, long time. KOTB: Yeah. It's interesting. GIFFORD: I mean, it's brilliant. It's--yeah, it's a little--got a Canadian thing to it, too. KOTB: Mm-hmm. GIFFORD: I know it's Alaskan, but the up with the end of a... KOTB: Yes. Oh, and the vowels. GIFFORD: ...phrase. Just brilliant. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: We'll have to practice those. GIFFORD: OK, my darling. What else? KOTB: We have--well, it is our Joy fit day, which we love Mondays. Because we're going to meet this woman, her name's Leah. She is only 25 years old and she struggled with her weight for a lot of her life. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: She dropped 110 pounds. And when she comes on, we're going to ask her for her advice, because I think she sounds like a lot of women who are struggling, and she did it her own way. GIFFORD: She did it her own way. KOTB: We're going to--we're going to tell you how she did it. Maybe you can do it her way, too. GIFFORD: She talks about how important the mind-set is... KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: ...to lose that kind of weight. Yeah. KOTB: And also, we're doing something--and this is a--I love this segment, too. Women wear bras that often don't fit them right. We don't know, we just get the same bra over and over and over. What are those? GIFFORD: You mean like that? KOTB: Yeah, what is that? GIFFORD: That is called a cleavage cupcake. I don't think you eat it. KOTB: Is it? GIFFORD: But although Cupcake Lady could do some great things with this, couldn't she? KOTB: Yeah. So is it... GIFFORD: I don't know. We're going to talk to her about it. KOTB: But your clothes will look completely different if you have the right bra on. GIFFORD: All right. KOTB: So we actually ambushed people in the crowd who had--were in need of a bra makeover. GIFFORD: Were cleavagely challenged. KOTB: Yes. GIFFORD: Or some--bosom--who knows. KOTB: But she's going to... GIFFORD: But they could look better with the right bra on. How's that? KOTB: Right. I like that. GIFFORD: OK. KOTB: So we're going to do befores and after. GIFFORD: All right. KOTB: And Blair Underwood's here. GIFFORD: Blair Underwood's here. Don't make me start the morning with it. The man--I hugged him for about 30 minutes. KOTB: Did you really? GIFFORD: I had to. KOTB: Adorable. GIFFORD: He's wearing--he's wearing Armani, called Attitude. Wait till you smell this man. KOTB: Really? GIFFORD: Yeah. He's just wonderful. And I just saw Ricky Gervais' movie, too, called"Ghost Town," last night, and I can't wait--there he is. KOTB: That was Blair. GIFFORD: There's our Blair, drinking a pitcher of beer. KOTB: That's what he does in the morning. GIFFORD: You go, guy. Mr. BLAIR UNDERWOOD: In the morning. GIFFORD: He's not just an actor and a director, he's also a terrific author. KOTB: Yes, here's his book. GIFFORD: He's getting great reviews for these series of books... KOTB: It's called"In the Night of the Heat." GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: So we're going to talk to Blair about that in just a second. GIFFORD: And we got a lot on our show today. KOTB: We do. GIFFORD: So stay with us, OK? KOTB: Stay with us. GIFFORD: Right after this. KOTB: See you.
