Epiphany celebrations in Istanbul
ISTANBUL, TURKEY - JANUARY 06: Orthodox Christians attend a mass led by Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I at the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul on January 06, 2016 to celebrate the Epiphany, one of the Orthodox Church’s most important feasts that commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. (00:04:55) Patriarch Bartholomew I, the Istanbul-based leader of many of the world’s Orthodox Christians, threw a wooden cross into the icy waters of the Golden Horn after a religious ceremony at the nearby Patriarchate. A waiting crowd then dived in, battling to be the first to retrieve the religious symbol from the dark waters. (00:05:31) Nicos Solis, a 28-year-old gym teacher from Greece, retrieved the cross. Speaking to reporters, Solis – a first-time visitor to Istanbul – said that he would like to come to the city again next year. (Footage by Engin Morgul/Anadolu Agency/Getty Images)
