'Big Brother' programme racist bullying claims: debate continues / sponsor pulls out; ENGLAND: London: INT Tessa Jowell MP (Culture Secretary) 2-WAY interview SOT - Let me put this in context / As Secretary of State, the position is very clear / We have a regulator / We have standards of taste and decency / We have a complaints procedure / It is for OFCOM to respond to enormous volume of public complaint that have been made about this episode of 'Big Brother' - I think this is racism and I don't think we ever want to put up with or enjoy racism as entertainment / I fear that the kind of views we have heard are views that are expressed within our country / What I don't want anybody to think is that that reflects the mainstream opinion in this country / I have to make absolutely clear that these are my personal views as a member of the Labour Party and Parliament / As far as relationship between 'Big Brother', its sponsors and the regulator is concerned there is a proper regulatory process to be gone through / I can express a view but what is shown on the television screens is a matter for the regulator - There is no question of punishing anybody about this / Let's not veer into hysteria about this / Make it absolutely clear it is not the job of ministers to decide what people see on their televisions / That is for broadcasters accountable to their advertisers, licence payers, within context of regulation set up by parliament
