Baume-les-Messieurs (Baume les Messieurs) is a small town located in the Jura department and classified among the most beautiful villages in France. It is also labeled city of character of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The town is located at the bottom of a caldera, surrounded by limestone cliffs of a hundred meters: it is one of the most famous steephead valley (known as "Reculée de Baume") in the Jura. The town is also famous for its tufa waterfall ("Cascade des Tufs" in French), located deep in the valley. The water comes out of the limestone rock and flows in successive basins to finish in a magnificent tufa waterfall, formed by precipitation of limestone, dissolved in the water during its underground journey. In summer, the waterfall is often nearly completely dewatered as in this picture.
