24th August 1953: Welsh film and stage actor Richard Burton (1925 - 1984) takes the lead in the Old Vic production of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', at the Assembly Hall, Edinburgh, during the Festival of Music and Drama. The Edinburgh Festival of Music and Drama began in 1947 and is held annually for three weeks in August.
