TUNISIA - JANUARY 01: The New French Resident General, General Pierre Boyer De Latour, Receiving A Warm Welcome In Djebeniana From Young Tunisians, Of Which Many Are Destourians, In 1954. The Destour, Nationalist Tunisian Party, Came From The "Young Tunisian" Movement Founded In The Early Xxth Century. In 1934, It Split Up Between The Old Destour, Advocating The Return To A Traditional Tunisia, And The Neo-Destour, Favorable To A Democratic State. Under Bourguiba'S Impulsion, The Latter Contributed To Grant Its Country'S Independence (1956) And To Establish The Republic (1957). The Year 1954 Was Marked In Tunisia By The Speech At Carthage Given By Pierre Mendes France, Who Declared Tunisia'S Internal Independence. (Photo by Keystone-France/Gamma-Keystone via Getty Images)
