Southern White Rhinoceros Born In Captivity
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY ? JANUARY 24: Staff of the Budapest Zoo (L-R) Peter Czifra, Matyas Liptovszky and Arpad Kover hold a new-born southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) calf on January 24, 2007 in Budapest, Hungary. Staff decided to take the calf, born on January 23, away from her 27 years old, 2500 kg, mother, Lulu as she couldn't feed her new-born. Veterinarians of the Budapest Zoo in co-operation with their colleagues from Germany and Austria used an artificial insemination as there was no chance for natural breeding due to the brother sister relationship of the zoo's rhinos. The expectations of the new birth were incredibly high after on August 2005 Lulu gave birth to a dead female calf. Veterinarians kept Lulu continuously monitored in the last 16-18 months of her pregnancy. This is the first birth of a rhino using artificial insemination.
