Evicted New Delhi Slum Dwellers

NEW DELHI, INDIA - APRIL 23: Residents living in a slum gather bricks to relocate their home near a newly dug roadway April 23, 2009 where agricultural areas they and members of twelve families have been farming for four generations and who will be forced to vacate for the 2010 Commonwealth Games being constructed in some of the last green belt areas of New Delhi, India. The Delhi Development Authority, or DDA, has served eviction notices to approximately 300 tenants even though the families have paid rent to the DDA through 2009. The tenants have taken the matter to civil court but the bulldozers will level their huts and residences before their July 2009 court date. The families originally came from Rajasthan in 1913 and have farmed, cultivated and occupied nearly 250 acres of fertile land along the Yamuna River. The family members formed a cooperative in 1949 and sell their vegetables in New Delhi's open air markets. The residents are being permitted to remove their brick buildings and claim they have been given no compensation for their forced removal. "For people to play games, they're evicting us," one resident said. (Photo by Robert Nickelsberg/Getty Images)
