Lee Franklin's Methane Contaminated Water Well

GRANVILLE SUMMIT, PA - SEPTEMBER 10: Lee Franklin a jar of water with bubbling methane at his home September 10, 2012 in Granville Summit, Pennsylvania. Franklin's home in Bradford County is above the Marcellus Shale region and near to a Chesapeake Energy's hydrofracked gas well which had a leak in May, 2012. Franklin's private water well and water supply was contaminated from the leak. Chesapeake supplies drinking water for his 4-children household and installed a reverse osmosis water filter to his contaminated well. His well water is only suitable for washing and plumbing. Hydrofracking is a controversial drilling method which pumps millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals into horizontally drilled wells to stimulate the release of the gas. The Marcellus Shale gas field stretches diagonally across West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York State. The environmental impact is a politically sensitive issue in a resource dependent state. (Photo by Robert Nickelsberg/Getty Images)
