Ship Creators in Dhaka, Bangladesh
KERANIGANJ, DHAKA, BANGLADESH - 2013/09/19: UZZAL is 33 years old and is a shipyard worker who lost one eye working without goggles. There are more than 35 shipyards in Old Dhakas Keraniganj area by the side of the Buriganga River, where ships, launches, and steamers of various sizes and shapes are built and repaired round the clock. About 15,000 workers, who work in these dockyards, earn Tk. 300_400 BDT (approx US $4 to US $5) a day. In the shipyards every worker is full of activity, no one has any time to talk. Constant work with flames, sound and dust may seem unbearable. But to the workers its their daily dose. These ship-craft-masters never get tired, often handling building ships with their own effort and their basic genetic talent without any break. The mostly work without goggles, risking serious injury or blindness, and most have no helmets, face masks or safety shoes They all climb tall rope ladders to the ships highest points to retrieve items, risking death if they slip but yet happily they keep working in the pleasure of building the ships.
