Gary Tyler, wrongly convicted
LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 9, 2023 - Gary Tyler stands next to a quilt he is working on in his studio at the Brewery Artist Lofts in Los Angeles on August 9, 2023. Tyler chose a butterfly to anchor this quilt for the upcoming Armory Show in New York. "To me it symbolizes peace and tranquility," he said about the quilt. Tyler first took up quilting as a volunteer in Louisiana's Angola state prison. Los Angeles advocates for Tyler who, was once the youngest person on death row in America and was imprisoned for 41 years, helped him move to LA and get set up in the studio. He was released from prison on April 29, 2016, remarkably, neither a broken or a bitter man. "I tell people, you enjoy your life. Now I'm trying to enjoy mine," he said.
