SCOTLAND - JANUARY 11: Engraving by W J F from the Illustrated London News, (3 January 1880), entitled 'Steam Launches and Divers' Barge Employed in the Search'. Designed by the engineer Thomas Bouch (1822-1890) and completed in 1878, the Tay Bridge was just under two miles in length and was considered the longest bridge in the world. However, it proved to be unstable against wind loadings. On 28 December 1879, as the Edinburgh to Dundee train was crossing the bridge during a strong gale, the structure collapsed, killing all 75 passengers on board. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
