Hong Kongers Go Car Camping To Escape Virus And Politics

HONG KONG, CHINA - February 25: Bobo Chan and her daughter Shelbie play at a beach where she parked her car on February 25, 2021 in Hong Kong, China. Chan used to be a traditional camper but under the Covid-19 social-distancing measures, all the designated campsites are closed. Instead of staying home, she started to Shachuhaku. She would stay out in her car a couple nights a week and explore the city's different scenic spots with her 3-year-old daughter. As travel restrictions remain in place, Hong Kong residents have taken to visiting the city's outdoor scenery as getaways, with some embarking on a novel urban trend of car camping called Shachuhaku — a Japanese-inspired hobby where car owners live out of their vehicles, turning them into well-equipped mobile homes to be closer to nature as an escape from staying home.
