Le Mans, France: Firefighters aided by track attendants battle the flames of the sports car which exploded in a tightly-packed crowd of spectators Saturday. The catastrophe occurred when a Mercedes, driven by Frenchman Pierre Levegh, collided with another car and ricocheted like a bullet across the track over a retaining wall. The death toll so far is placed at 79 with another 75 hospitalized. It was the worst accident in auto racing history.
