If someone really left a cake out in the rain then this fractal movie demonstrates a likely outcome. Sticky, messy, gooey icing dribbling down in waves of white, pink and blue. Or perhaps not icing, but ice? This movie clip runs for 24 seconds, and is made up of 600 fractal images. Each image is a kind of mathematical graph, laid out as a picture. A number is put into an equation, and the answer is recorded as a coloured dot. That answer is then put into the same equation to generate a second answer, which is also plotted. This procedure is repeated thousands of times, with each new answer being used to generate the next one. The end results can be astonishingly complicated and beautiful, and any part of the image can be zoomed into in order to reveal even more complexity.
