New Zealand: Hundreds of pilot whales stranded at Farewell Spit

NEW ZEALAND, Farewell Spit: Hundreds of pilot whales are stranded after swimming into the shallow waters of a New Zealand bay at Farewell Spit as seen on February 9, 2017. They got stuck in the waterway and beached themselves on the coastline. More than 500 rescuers tried frantically to send the pilot whales back out to sea, but at least 250 died in what officials called one of the worst whale stranding in New Zealand’s history. - Credit: Newzulu / Chris Clarkson
