USS Nautilus Sailing on Nuclear Energy
(Original Caption) Under way for the first time powered by atomic energy, the USS Nautilus moves down the Thames River After leaving its berth January 17th. The world's first atomic powered submarine, the Nautilus, protected by armed Coast Guard Patrol boats, went to sea for a serries of fitness trials. As the huge craft dropped its lines and backed into the channel of the Thames, it blinker signalled "Under way on Nuclear Power", and headed into Long Island Sound.
