Rudy Simmons, of Palmdale, makes the sign of the cross after lighting a candle at a memorial for Esperanza Serrano at the Century Ceck Cashing business in Lynwood. "She was a sweet person, a beautiful person," Simmons said, who cashed checks with Serrano for 15 years. Serrano had run the Cenutury Check Cashing business in Lynwood for almost 30 years and was a familiar face in the tough neighborhood along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Then on Tuesday, as she opened her store, the 66yearold was robbed and fatally shot. The community is angry and in mourning. (Photo by Allen J. Schaben/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)
