The LA Phil opens the new year with what could be one of the highlights of the season, a staged and video-ized performance of Beethoven's transformative Missa Solemnis, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, as part of the L.A. born conductor's 70th birthday celebrations. The staging is by James Durrah, a young L.A. director who is beginning to make waves. This has the making of a major occasion, and is a co-production with the S.F.
