Poroshenko Meets With German Leaders In Berlin

BERLIN, GERMANY - MARCH 16: German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) stands in front of a computed tomography scanner as she visits the Bundeswehrkrankenhaus, a hospital in which German military, German government employees and ordinary civilians are treated, with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko (unseen) on March 16, 2015 in Berlin, Germany. Poroshenko was in Berlin for a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel over the implementation of the Minsk ceasefire agreement as well as further reforms to help stabilize the troubled country. The conflict between Russian-backed separatists and government troops that began in Ukraine last year has claimed over 6,000 lives and displaced nearly 1.8 million people, according to the human rights office of the United Nations. The German military has been active in assisting those injured in the ongoing dispute in the region, treating the country's own soldiers sent to Germany for medical aid, and has provided non-lethal military equipment such as protective vests. Poroshenko is expected to request more such assistance during his visit to the country. (Photo by Adam Berry/Getty Images)
