Jimmy Carter - Atlanta International Raceway

HAMPTON, GA — Early-1970s: Jimmy Carter, who was to become the 39th President of the United States, attended several events at Atlanta International Raceway while he was Governor of Georgia in the early-1970s. Carter, who at one time was a ticket vendor for the track and was in attendance for the first Daytona 500 in 1959, said if he became Governor he would have the NASCAR Cup drivers over to the Governor’s Mansion for a barbeque, and he later made good on that promise.
