Paintings Seized by Nazis at the St. Louis Art Museum
Caption: F367764 02: A detail of the 1908 work by French artist Henri Matisse, 'Bathers With a Turtle,' that is being investigated by the St. Louis Art Museum April 14, 2000. It was learned the painting is one of four pieces the museum has that were once owned by German Nazis. The works were stolen from German museums by the Nazis in the 1930's and were auctioned to area art collectors in 1939. Museum director Brent Benjamin said the museum would return or pay for pieces that could be traced to Nazi Germany. (Photo by Bill Greenblatt/Liaison)
