Saxony Struggles With Refugees Influx
BAUTZEN, GERMANY - JANUARY 08: Chakib Rahali, 33, a refugee from Tunisia, smokes a cigarette as a television shows a French Arabic-language news program in the recreation room at the Spreehotel refugee center on January 8, 2015 in Bautzen, Germany. Chakib, along with his wife and 8-week old son, is seeking asylum in Germany. Approximately 200 refugees, many of them from Syria and Tunisia, but also from Chechnya, the Balkans, Iran, Russia and elsewhere, live at the center. The Spreehotel, located a few kilometers outside Bautzen, transitioned to a refugee home about 6 months ago, despite vocal opposition from many Bautzen residents. Germany is absorbing a record-number of refugees and Saxony is struggling to accommodate its share, which in 2014 was approximately 10,000. The arrival of refugees in communities has also led to discontent among local residents, a factor that is fueling the immigration-wary Pegida movement and its weekly rallies in Dresden that recently drew 18,000 participants.
