David Niven

Actor David Niven (1909 - 1983), born in Kirriemuir, Angus. After serving in the Highland Light Infantry in Malta, Niven tried his hand at a range of jobs from news reporter to bartender. His travels took him to Los Angeles where he entered films as an extra in 1934. When World War II broke out Niven went back into the army. He was discharged as a colonel and given leave to star in two British propaganda films, 'Spitfire' (1942) and 'The Way Ahead' (1944) which was directed by Carol Reed. Niven starred in many successful films during his long career, including Mike Todd's 'Around the World in 80 Days' (1956) in which he played Phileas Fogg and 'Separate Tables' (1958) for which he won a Best Actor Academy Award.
